Emmy starlets nix necklaces, don earrings and bracelets

Most celebrities opted to use jewel tones as inspiration for their dress hues, tiffany jewelry but many kept their necks jewel-free at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Instead, television’s leading ladies wore jewelry in moderation, choosing cuff bracelets, bangles, bold rings and dangling earrings as their red carpet accessories du jour at the Sept. 16 Hollywood bash.

To no one’s surprise, gold and diamond pieces abounded, providing the perfect foil for the many long, form-fitting gowns, often in berry hues.

Ugly Betty star America Ferrera was one of the ringleaders of the bare-neck movement, though she went for a more classic look that included blackened platinum and diamond dangling earrings and rings by Lorraine Schwartz to set off her strapless, cobalt blue gown. Minnie Driver, similarly sans neckwear, jazzed up her chartreuse satin dress with diamond, ruby and pearl earrings and a black bakelite cuff with diamonds and rubies set in 22-karat gold, both by Bochic. Even with a plunging neckline, Queen Latifah kept her neck bare too, choosing a serpentine bracelet, pendant earrings and a right-hand ring, all featuring rough and pav茅 diamonds, by Diamond in the Rough.

Amanda Gizzi, the Jewelry Information Center’s associate director for public relations, says silver cufflinks dangly earrings, often paired with bangles or a cuff, were a red-carpet focal point.

“When it comes to earrings, they tend to make women feel more dressed up because attention is brought to their faces,” Gizzi says.

Emmy Awards attendee Michael O’Connor, senior vice president of marketing communications and public relations for Platinum Guild International USA, says earrings, predominantly stopping at jaw levels, were abundant. He also observed that Emmys attendees did, in fact, wear necklaces, but those without them received more coverage.

He noted a pins trend, seen on actresses such as Hayden Panettiere and Helen Mirren, and a stacked bangle trend, spotted on actress Katherine Heigl and TV hostess Lara Spencer. Hollywood men chose to accessorize too, especially with platinum.

Mark Wahlberg, executive producer of Entourage, wore Kwiat diamond and platinum cuff links with sapphire accents, plus platinum shirt studs with diamond and onyx.

“Leslie [David] Baker was probably the most blinged out,” O’Connor says. The Office actor shone in silver money clips platinum and diamond cuff links with a shirt studs set by Neil Lane, a platinum and diamond watch by Pierre Kunz and a platinum and diamond ring by Karo Vartanian.

At a pre-show event, Entertainment Tonight host Mark Steines wore an Arnold Brant tuxedo, valued at $25,000. It was custom tailored and hand-sewn with 10 yards of platinum thread inlaid in the fabric.

New Auburn tree picked for city’s Christmas decoration

The massive evergreen tree in front of the Vincent Apartment building on Mill Street has served as New Auburn’s Christmas silver jewelry tree for the last 30 years — but not this year.

Crews are scheduled to cut down the three-story-tall tree Thursday morning and truck it three-quarters of a mile north on Main Street, to Festival Plaza. It will be decorated there as the official Christmas tree for the city.

“It’s a beautiful tree and we’re going to miss it,” said Rick Whiting, executive director of the Auburn Housing Authority. “But as long as we get something else in there, it should be OK.”

Crews from the city and Cote Crane and Rigging of Auburn are scheduled to begin silver bracelets cutting the tree at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Rick Hersom of Auburn Public Works.

“It’s getting to the point now that it’s getting hard to decorate,” Hersom said. “It’s too tall, outgrowing its base, and it’s not all that healthy.”

That’s a shame, according to Maurice Fournier, of 30 Fourth St. The tree has been New Auburn’s community Christmas tree for the last 30 years.

“I’m concerned, because I think they could find another tree someplace else,” Fournier said. “Let us keep our Christmas tree. But I think it’s just too far gone to save it now.”

But Ken Blais, of Rolly’s Diner, said the change could be a good thing. The tree has been across silver cufflinks the street from his restaurant as long as he can remember.

“But as long as we get another tree somewhere, it’ll be fine,” Blais said. “It’s big, but I don’t think it’s been maintained all that much. As long as we get a tree to decorate somewhere, I don’t mind.”

The housing authority is scheduled to finish work on the Vincent Apartment building next month. The tree, on a triangular sliver of land between the building and the South Main Street/Mill Street intersection, will be replaced.

“There is a lot we can do with that space,” Whiting said. “There’s room there for a little park, or a bench silver money clips and some green space. It’s unused now because of the tree. But it might be nice to get something there for our residents. That’s what we’re hoping for.”

Auburn Ward 5 City Councilor Ray Berube agreed. Berube’s ward includes New Auburn.

“We have what’s shaping up to be a very nice looking building down there, but that tree is hiding it,” Berube said. “So I’m all in favor of cutting it down, on the condition that we have another, just as nice, but 6 or 8 feet tall. That could grow into a nice Christmas tree over the next few years.”

Radio celebrity needs help finding ring

Comedy Dave Vitty lost it after he got to Florida.

The head writer of the Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 in England recently vacationed with his family at Pine Island.

After spending the day there, he went to visit his in-laws’ home in Lake County. That’s when he discovered his wedding band was missing.

He thinks it is buried somewhere in tiffany jewelry the sand.

“I’m willing to help him out because I feel bad for him,” said Willie Kouchounian, owner of Willy’s Tropical Breeze Cafe, the food-and-beverage stand at Pine Island. “I hate to say it, but we’ve never had anyone turn in any jewelry.”

Vitty contacted Kouchounian shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. He heard the phone ring as soon as he arrived at his booth.

Vitty was upset, he said. He still hopes to get his ring back.

Kouchounian agreed to ask some people with metal detectors to search the area. He also plans to hang a sign on his booth asking people to look out for a sparkling gold ring.

Kouchounian is asking Vitty to agree to a reward — at least $100 — which would entice more people to search for it, he said.

Then again, Kouchounian has honest customers.

“People turn in keys, glasses and sometimes wallets,” he said. “I’ve had wallets turned in with the money still in them.”

Efforts to contact Vitty and BBC Radio 1 in London were not successful.

When Vitty noticed his ring was missing, he had only hours until his silver cufflinks departure flight, according to a BBC news release. There was no time for him to return to Pine Island.

That’s why he is “appealing to the good people of America to help retrieve this most-precious of items,” according to the BBC.

He is asking anyone with access to a metal detector to search the beach. He thinks he lost it near the playground, Kouchounian said.

Vitty has promised to thank the person who finds the silver money clips ring live and on the air. The Chris Moyles Show airs weekdays at 6:30 a.m. Eastern time on Sirius XM.

“Great Britain and the United States have enjoyed a strong relationship over the years based on trust, respect and friendship, and I can only pray that one of my U.S. ‘cousins’ finds this ring and delivers it safely back to my naked finger,” Vitty stated in the BBC media release.

He is asking anyone who discovers it to get in touch with him through BBC Radio 1 or e-mail him directly at david.vitty@bbc.co.uk.
