N.H.L. in Talks To Start League For Women

Faced with the threat of their sport being excluded from the Winter Olympics after 2014 because of a lack of competitiveness, women’s hockey officials have held preliminary discussions with the N.H.L. about forming an N.H.L.-supported women’s league.

"I was in a meeting just this week with the N.H.L. and all the stakeholders in women’s hockey, and I think we have the ear of the N.H.L.," Hayley Wickenheiser, 32, a Canadian forward regarded as one of the game’s greatest female players, said Thursday.

"They’re looking at it right now from a sponsorship level to get it off the ground,Charm bracelet," Wickenheiser said, referring to the N.H.L. "We’re not talking about big salaries, watches, just sensible steps to get it on the ice to entertain people and see where it can go, and then down the road having an elite, W.N.B.A.-type league."

Bill Daly, the N.H.L. deputy commissioner, said the talks had taken place over a number of months and were very preliminary, but they were aimed at setting up a "women’s league or women’s competition."

The sense of crisis for the sport emerged after the Vancouver Games. As in the previous three Olympics, it was one-sided, with Canada and the United States dominating their European opponents. Canada beat Slovakia, 18-0, in one game; the United States beat Russia, 13-0, in another.

On the eve of Canada’s 2-0 victory over the Americans in the gold medal match, the International Olympic Committee’s president, Jacques Rogge, said that women’s hockey "cannot continue without improvement." The comment raised the specter that the sport might go the way of softball, pendants, which was dropped from the Olympics because of the dominance of the United States.

The electronic device will make it possible for the woman, from the Isle of Wight, rings, to hear sound in both ears by running two stimulator wires from the single implant.

One will go into one inner ear and the other under her scalp from the single implant into her other ear – giving the 44-year-old woman much improved bilateral hearing.

Usually adults only have one implant fitted in one ear which leads to problems in noisy situations or finding where the sound is coming from.

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that can help both adults and children who have a severe to profound hearing loss.

It has two parts: an internal receiver/stimulator package and electrode array, pendants, and an external speech processor that looks like a hearing aid.

The device uses small electrical currents to directly stimulate the hearing nerve, which then sends signals to the brain where they are interpreted as sound.

The procedure has been developed at the South of England Cochlear Implant Centre (SOECIC), based at the University of Southampton.

Joint head of the centre Julie Brinton said: "Some adults and children have already received two implants, with one in each ear. The difference with the device being used today is that, money clips, although information is delivered to each ear, there is only one implant."

Although around 40 of these devices have been implanted in patients in Europe,Atlas charm bracelet, this is the first of its kind in the UK, the centre said.

Shop out of season to save on clothing

As back-to-school season approaches, I’m getting ready to hit the stores for the latest fashions for my 4-year-old daughter. Sort of. While everyone else shops for cute fall outfits,Charm bracelet, I’ll be skimming the clearance racks, picking up tank tops, shorts, cuff Links, bathing suits and sundresses … all for next year.

While off-season shopping works like a charm for little kids without strong opinions, I’ll admit that teenagers might not let you get away with this. That said, if you steer clear of anything too trendy and think of the basics, you might have luck convincing them.

Shopping ahead for adults is relatively easy, but buying a year ahead of time for growing kids can be a challenge. Here are a few tips:

– Think about wardrobe basics. While you might not want to guess your kids’ shoe sizes a year ahead, items like jeans, khaki pants, T-shirts and jackets can cross seasons and be worn as your kids grow into them. They might even last you a few years.

– When in doubt, go a size bigger. Clothes shrink. If something is way too big, you can always put it away another few months or save it for the following year. If you’ve totally missed the mark, you can re-sell or consign.

– If you find a can’t-miss deal on shoes,Bead bracelet, consider styles like tennis shoes that can be worn year-round. If you’re a Crocs fan, you’ll find them to be flexible since they tend to span two kids’ sizes (toddler 8/9).

– Stock up. If you find an amazing deal on jeans or socks, consider buying enough for two years, especially if your kids are little.

– Color coordinate and mix and match. Once you have the basics (denim and khakis), pick a few color families (we like pink, pendants, purple and blue) and stick with them. Get a good mix of patterns and solids so you can pair different shirts and bottoms.

– Be wary of bright yellow shorts. I once bought a pair of neon yellow shorts for my daughter because they were $1, and I never did find anything that looked right with them. They only cost me a dollar, but it was a dollar I wasted.

– Keep an eye on quality. Cheap is good, but look for items that will hold up.

– Wait until the end of the season, but don’t wait too long or you won’t find anything that matches. By late July or early August, most stores are putting out back-to-school clothes for the fall and moving summer merchandise to the clearance racks. Start looking for winter clothes in February/March, when spring lines arrive.

– Shop after the holidays. You might find a beautiful Easter dress for $3 like we did!

– Search for deep discounts. You should be able to find baby/toddler items for as low as $1-$3 each and kids’ separates for $2-$4 each. I found a London Fog winter coat for my daughter at Burlington last summer for just $9!

– Don’t forget your coupons. Most stores allow them on clearance items, so sign up for your favorite stores’ mail and e-mail lists. Happy sales!

Voters to decide on sales tax in November

The renewal of the one-cent Capital Projects Sales Tax will be decided in November by voters.

Despite the urging of several who spoke during the public hearing on the issue, key rings, Aiken County Council approved by a majority to put the referendum on the ballot this year instead of postponing it until 2011. And,bracelets, in turn, pendants, approved the lengthy list of projects that would be funded by the sales tax revenue if the referendum passes.

Several members of Council, by their own admission, were undecided on the referendum’s timing up until the moment the vote was taken. Ultimately, however, money clips, they said they had no desire to spend taxpayer money on a 2011 special election. Nor did they want to risk low voter turnout, for which special elections are notorious. More people are expected to be drawn to the polls this November eager for the chance to shape state leadership in races for governor, lieutenant governor, superintendent of education and others.

"I don’t believe we should ever have a vote on a tax in a special election," Councilwoman Kathy Rawls said.

Yet, the majority of those who addressed Council Tuesday, encouraged the body to delay the referendum for one year citing the electorate’s frustration with perceived government mismanagement of money — more specifically on the state and federal level — and with taxes in general.

"We’re all very much aware of how angry people are. They are frustrated with taxes … and the loss of individual rights. I recommend holding off one year. The taxpayers’ attitude may change," said Pete Seaha, chairman of the Aiken County TEA Party.

Others took issue, not only with the very idea of the tax, but with the projects it proposes to fund. One woman scoffed what she called "fluff" projects.

"Playgrounds. Why do we need new playgrounds? It is not the job of government to provide those things," she said.

Councilman Gary Bunker argued that one man’s fluff is another man’s needs but did note he was "dismayed" the City of Aiken chose to keep the Railroad Depot on its list.

Councilman Willar Hightower voted in opposition to the ordinance proposing the tax’s continuation.

"I don’t like a sales tax to fund basic government functions," he said. "When I look at the list, for the most part it is good. But, there seemed to be a mood this year of, ‘We don’t want to fund certain organizations.’ Railroad Depot funding is not what you want to do. But there are other worthy organizations, like the Cumbee Center."

Councilwoman LaWana McKenzie was absent.

The Capital Projects Sales Tax is a special one-cent option sales tax applying to the gross proceeds of sales in Aiken County, excluding unprepared food if it is purchased with food stamps. County Administrator Clay Killian has estimated the total take from round three would be anywhere between $130 million to $145 million.

This will be the third renewal. Each reimposed tax must not exceed seven years from the date of reimposition. It will not be another penny collected on top of the current one.

If voters do not pass it in November, the referendum cannot be reintroduced until 2012. The current round is expected to expire in the first quarter of 2012.

"I am not so sure the next four years are going to be a heck of a lot of fun without the Capital Projects Sales Tax," said Councilman Scott Singer.

Vols, Lady Vols talking about preseason event for

Tennessee is considering holding a fan-friendly preseason basketball event on Oct. 22, the day before the Vols football team plays host to Alabama.

UT administrators and coaches met on Tuesday to open discussions on the possibility of the event at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"We’re investigating the opportunities, pendants," Lady Vols athletic director Joan Cronan said. "If we do it, we’ll probably do both the men’s and women’s (programs) together."

The last time Tennessee held a preseason event was in 2005.

Cronan said she anticipates there will be more meetings on the possibility of the event and what it would consist of before any decisions are made.

UT men’s coach Bruce Pearl has taken a stance in the past that he’s not an advocate of "Midnight Madness," as he would rather use the NCAA-allotted time to prepare his team for the season.

"I’d rather lock the doors at midnight and have a hard practice and see who pukes first on the court, cuff Links," Pearl once said, jokingly.

But Pearl has also said he’ll do whatever university leadership deems best for the programs,Atlas charm bracelet, and said that under the right circumstances he would be interested in a preseason event that would both entertain the fans and be useful to the players.

If UT does hold a preseason basketball event prior to this season, it’s unlikely it would be at midnight.

Children line up at mall to whisper a Christmas wish

From his perch on an avocado green couch at Modesto’s Vintage Faire Mall, tiffany jewelry Santa Claus rattled off his most popular gift requests from children this winter: dogs, horses, and the latest gadgets and electronics.

There was a more unusual request from one little boy — a vacuum.

“At least we know someone’s going to get help around the house,” Santa said.

Santa took up residence at the mall a few days ago and will be posing for pictures and pendants listening to wish lists through Christmas.

A line of those waiting to sit on his lap and share their Christmas wishes didn’t take long to form.

Some children were squirmy, like 18-month-old Michael Anderson, who slid out of Santa’s lap twice. On the third try his mother, Michelle, was able to get a photo.

Others sat shyly next to Santa while they asked for Nintendo games and dolls.

Four-year-old Bryce Bramble has big dreams of what Santa should put under his earrings Christmas tree.

What did he ask for?

“I can’t remember, there were so many things,” he said.
