India-made Anant diamond jewellery to sparkle in W Asia

Filed under: earrings, key rings — Tags: , — admin @ 7:24 pm

Mr Sanjay Kothari, convenor of promotion, marketing and business development at GJEPC, said, “We wanted to introduce Anant in Dubai by April, but it has been delayed due to the recent financial crisis in Dubai. It would now be launched in July.” The Council has already spent Rs 9 crore on various promotional activities including tiffany advertisements and refurbishing retailers’ outlets to highlight the brand.

Actor Sonam Kapoor has also been roped in as a brand ambassador, said Mr Kothari.

Retailers stand to gain as the Council will take care of promotional expenses.

RS 11-CR CORPUS GJEPC formed a corpus of Rs 11 crore, with retailers chipping in with Rs four lakh each, and manufacturers Rs 10 lakh each while the Council itself set aside Rs 2 crore for the promotional activities.

The Council in September had taken upon itself to promote diamond jewellery after De Beers cut its promotional activities in the country, said Mr Kothari.

GJEPC created a new brand Anant Diamond Jewellery by bringing together top 100 retail jewellers including GRT, Khazana Jewellers, Joy Alukkas, Reliance, Tanishq, Orra, TBZ, Rio Tinto, Anmol Jewellers and Carbon.

With the gold prices rising, many people are now considering the single line Anant Diamond earrings to offer as gift, said a Mumbai- based jeweller.

DIAMOND SHORTAGE Rough diamond prices have risen sharply in the past few months after most miners such as De Beers, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Alrosa cut their production following the economic downturn and financial constraints. De Beers recently revealed that it has reduced its first quarter production by almost 90 per cent in 2009.

The De Beers Diamond Trading Company (DTC) has raised the prices of rough diamonds by about five and 10 per cent since March this year, said a Mumbai-based jeweller. Most of the DTC’s Indian sightholders were the worst-affected as prices of smaller roughs being supplied to the Indian market were raised between 3 and 7 per cent. Surat, the hub for diamond processing, imports about Rs 30,000 crore worth of roughs per annum, with De Beers supplying about 60 per cent.

Jews could use some love this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is coming. As a Jew right now, are you feeling the love? Between the Madoff swindle and the invasion of Gaza, there’s not a whole lot of love toward Jews in the air.

The Jewish community could use a nice card right about now. Not one of those postmodern sarcastic ones, either.

Yes, Valentine’s Day is not a Jewish day. But a card with a “yasher koach,” a “may you have valentines gifts strength” from someone, would be awfully nice right now for a community rocked by affinity scams, budget meltdowns and protest demonstrations.

Sometimes you just can’t wait for that card to come from that special someone; heavy-duty hints are in order, you begin to write the card in your head.

What should the card look like and say?

Jews are no strangers to paper cutting – it has been a means of Jewish expression since flourishing in the 18th and 19th centuries. So perhaps something inspired by this style is in order.

Nor are Jews any strangers to love poetry. The Song of Songs,” Shir Hashirim, is highly charged with kisses, fragrance and a “banner of love,” and Sephardic love songs from medieval Spain such as “Avrix mi galenica,” “Let me in my love,” are filled with longings of personal passion.

Hmmm. Maybe a bit too personal for that first card.

More broadly, Irving Berlin told America in one of his songs that “falling in love is wonderful.” Maybe America needs now to hear why it’s wonderful to fall in love with Jews.

Yes, we have all seen the books and online lists of Jewish contributions, and read books like the Gifts pendants of the Jews, but why should the world really love Jews?

To create an answer, I have my paper and scissors out, and quill in hand. I am going to make a Valentine, er, a papercut, and practice a little ahavat Yisrael, love of the people Israel, counting the ways I love Jews.

You need to love Jews for

1. Inventing tzedakah boxes. Low tech. High concept. Coin goes in here – tzedek, justice, comes out there. Portable, cheaply reproducible and hopefully copied by everyone, the box is a powerful communal tool. Dating from the Temple, it provides an anonymous, easy method to contribute. Lives have been rebuilt with it, forests planted, mouths fed, study supported, all from something as simple as a cardboard can.

2. Cooking kasha vamishkes. A side dish of just buckwheat groats and bowtie noodles; think of it as Jewish aromatherapy. The smell gets key rings right up in your head. Like in an old animated cartoon, the aroma transports you to another place: your mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen. The Jewish obsession with food has led us to creating food pantries and organizations such as Mazon, “food” in Hebrew,” and Sova, “to be satisfied,” in Los Angeles.

3. Writing a ketubah, a Jewish marriage contract, where everything is spelled out: the responsibilities of the groom and the rights of the bride. Long before Victoria’s Secret, this document exposed other secrets, including a wife’s conjugal rights.

4. Asking questions. Beginning with Passover, Jews have many questions, and though often a pain to people in authority, the world should love us for it. The prophetic line of asking tough questions and speaking truth to power runs right through here.

5. Praying for peace. Our prayers include either the blessing of Sim shalom b’olam, “grant universal peace,” earrings or Shalom Rav, “grant true and lasting peace.” Yes, Israel again finds itself at war. But at the same time, with intention, care and determination, Jews worldwide each day and especially on Shabbat focus on this single peaceful blessing.

6. Giving the world Chelm. Think of it, .the world’s first reality show – a place where everyone is goofier than you. As the folklore story goes, an angel is traveling to earth with a sack of simple souls to distribute around the world when the bag rips, sending them all down onto one place – the village of Chelm. What better saving metaphor to have handy on those days when your meeting is canceled or your project dissed: You have wandered into Chelm.

7. Breaking religious law. Pikuach nefesh, saving a human life, is a Torah principle that allows an individual to break almost any Jewish law if they are acting to save a life. Jews are allowed to break the Sabbath, or other holiday, or even donate organs if a life, anyone’s, is at stake.

8. Creating the Havdalah service. To move from Shabbat, the day of rest, to the work week, Jews devised Havdalah. Derived from the Hebrew word I’havdll, to separate, it’s a simple ceremony that includes a multiwicked candle and a shaker filled with spices and a cup of wine. The songs soothe, the flame calms, the spices revive, the wine gives a little jolt; you are awakened to the possibilities of another week. If that’s not to love, then what is?

Orange police hope to reunite ring, owner

Filed under: key rings — Tags: — admin @ 6:16 pm

The Police Department has a wedding tiffany ring. All it needs is the correct finger.

The department is hoping to reunite the lost wedding ring with its owner. Assistant Police Chief Edward Koether said the ring was found by a good Samaritan Nov. 21 or 22 in the parking lot at 538 Boston Post Road. The shopping plaza includes a Raymour & Flanigan furniture store.

He said the ring has someuniquequalities that would be known only to the owner, including shape, color and value. Police declined to release a photo of the ring.

“We will only describe the ring as a woman’s wedding-type earrings ring,” Koether said. “It would be counterproductive to describe it further.”

The good Samaritan who found the ring made some inquiries with businesses, and later turned the ring over to police at headquarters, Koether said.

“She was hopeful that the owner would contact police and the ring could be returned,” Koether said.

Police have contacted each of the businesses in the plaza over the past week, but no one had reported the loss.

“While not exaggeratedly expensive, the key rings has value, and I’m hoping publicity will help to connect the owner with the ring,” Koether said. “Especially during this season, to have a successful conclusion to a sentimental property loss would be one of the good parts of our job.”

To claim the ring, contact Lt. Andrew Steinbrick at 203-891-2138 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Seasonal Lull as Housing Market Prepares for Christmas

Filed under: key rings — Tags: — admin @ 7:56 pm

The Rightmove House Price Index for November 2009 has now been released. The survey tiffany jewellery measures new properties for sale in the last month covering 90% of the market.

Average national asking prices fell by 3,744 pounds Sterling this month as the traditional autumn buoyancy tailed off. The 1.6% decrease compares with falls of 2.9% in November last year and 0.7% in November 2007. The onset of the winter market brings what we predict will be the first of three monthly falls before house prices resume their recovery in February of next year. Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove comments: “In all but the most buoyant of markets, home moving comes second to Christmas festivities. While the market has recovered from some dreadful lows, this month’s price fall proves that it does not yet have the strength to buck seasonal trends. We therefore expect three months of asking price falls before a tentative recovery in early spring, likely followed by pre-election jitters.”

The extent of the market recovery from the dramatic price falls seen last year is shown by key rings year-on-year price rises in seven out of ten regions, resulting in an average national rise of 1.6% compared to November 2008. A majority of the country now has average asking prices that are above those of twelve months ago. Only the East Midlands, the North and the North-West remain in negative year-on-year territory. The East Midlands is the worst performer with prices 1.6% below those of November 2008, with the North down 0.6% and the North-West just short of breakeven at minus 0.1%. The southern regions show the largest increases, with the South-East leading the way with an average rise of 3.8% driven by the lowest average stock levels per estate agency branch. At the other end of the scale, the three regions still in negative year-on-year price territory have the highest stock numbers per estate agency branch.

Shipside adds: “The shortage of stock is worse in the south than it is in the north, leading to greater upwards pressure on prices due to higher numbers of willing and able buyers who have fewer properties to choose from. Recoveries tend to start in the south, and with mortgage lenders favouring buyers with larger deposits and greater job necklaces security, it is no surprise that the trend has been repeated this time around. With parts of the north of the country also clawing their way back to a year-on-year price standstill, we recorded an average annual national rise of 3,461 pounds. That would have looked pretty far-fetched a year ago.”
