IT wasn’t until some elementary schools banned Silly Bandz,tiffany Pendants sale, those colorful plastic bracelets that are the latest fad among the pencil-box set, that Ramona Sidlo, who is 30, wanted them for herself.

"I thought, ‘This is nuts that a rubber band is causing so much hype,’ " she said. "If kids are going crazy over these, I have to have them."

For the uninitiated,shop for tiffany bracelets, Silly Bandz are rubber bands, often in neon colors, that are shaped like everyday objects: a guitar, a baseball bat, a princess. Unlike the beige round elastics stashed in your desk drawer, these are meant to be worn on the wrist,money clips, and they snap back into their original silicon-molded shape — a turtle, perhaps, or a dinosaur or tiara — when you take them off. Children like to collect them by the Ziploc bag, and some principals have banished them, saying they’re a distraction.

Ms. Sidlo, who lives in Brooklyn and runs a creative consulting company called threeNYC, now wears three on her left wrist — a palm tree, the number 3 and a monkey — along with a Rolex watch and several other bracelets,tiffany rings on sale, including one with a Tiffany silver heart charm, an evil eye, and one with purple beads.

"The Silly Bandz look great in there," she said.

She is not the only adult piling them on. Mary-Kate Olsen and Sarah Jessica Parker have been seen wearing them, as have the model Agyness Deyn and her friend Henry Holland, the House of Holland designer. Kelly Ripa wore them on "Live With Regis and Kelly" and got Regis Philbin to put one on, too. Even the food writer and TV host Anthony Bourdain was photographed for New York magazine a few weeks ago with a turquoise one on his wrist.

"It’s a natural progression for the product," said Robert Croak, the president of BCP Imports, the company in Toledo, Ohio, that makes Silly Bandz. "When we developed them, we always thought they’d be a great fashion accessory for all ages. Kids just took to them first."

In the same way that children trade Silly Bandz (and their many knockoffs) among themselves –swapping, say, a glow-in-the dark elephant for a purple sea horse –people their 20s and 30s are introducing one another to the bracelets’ charms. They hand them out to friends at bars, or even to strangers on the train.

One Silly Bandz evangelist is Anna Sheffield, a jewelry designer who lives on the Bowery and designs under her own name and the brand Bing Bang.

"I’m covered in tattoos, so they look a little different on me than a little kid," Ms. Sheffield said. She wears Silly Bandz along with three oval bangles and a two-finger ring, both of her own design. "I was in a meeting at Bergdorf’s, and everyone was like: ‘My kid has those. Why are you wearing them?’ " she said.

Ms. Sheffield learned of Silly Bandz from her friend Ms. Sidlo, who gave her a rainbow-colored peace sign. "I love wearing them and giving them away," Ms. Sheffield said. "If you haven’t seen one yet, it’s like the first time you tried an ice cream cone."

Silly Bandz are so popular that there are now numerous imitations in stores nationwide, but the originals, which are $4.95 for a pack of 24, come from BCP Imports. To keep up with demand,tiffany money clips for sale, the company has grown to 200 employees, up from 20, in the last year.

For some young adults, wearing Silly Bandz may be something more than a kitschy fashion statement.

"I think if you’ve just entered the adult world, you look for things that make you feel younger, like you’re still a kid," said Alyssa Bieler, 23, a design assistant at a book publisher who lives in Garden City, N.Y.

At work, Ms. Bieler wears bracelets shaped like hippos and ostriches. "It’s depressing to sit in a cubicle for nine hours a day," she said. "If you have on a silly rubber band that glows in the dark, it makes everything a little better."

Palmetto Boys and Girls State is a camp held for the top rising high school seniors in South Carolina.

It focuses on understanding politics and government, team building, intramural sports and leadership development.

Navy Seaman Jessica J. Pettit, daughter of Nancy J. Pettit of Spartanburg, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Pettit completed a variety of training. It included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

"Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication,bracelets, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. "Battle Stations" was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

Pettit is a 2008 graduate of Dorman High School.

Junneshia Littlejohn, a resident of Gaffney, recently earned an Associate in Science in nursing from Excelsior College.

The Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Development Council have announced the selection of Rudy Painter from Countybanc Insurance Inc. as the recipient of third Annual Outstanding Leadership Award. This award was designed to recognize a graduate of the Leadership Greer Program who has demonstrated effective leadership and furthered the growth of the community through involvement in community/civic programs, organizations and/or activities.

Painter is vice president of Countybanc Insurance Inc. and lives in Greer with his wife, Marsha Campbell,money clips, and their five children.

Painter is originally from Easley, and he has worked there and in Anderson. He was active in Chamber work in both of those locations. He came to Greer in 1994, and he immediately became involved in the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce.

Painter has served the Greer Family Festival in numerous capacities since 2000. He served as chairman of the Greer Family Festival for the past several years and helped motivate hundreds of volunteers and festival staff to organize the most successful family festivals to date. Not only did he spend countless hours in planning meetings and sponsorship solicitation during the months leading up to the event, but he also worked behind the scenes to make sure the festivals were economical for people to enjoy.

Painter has served on the board of the Greater Greer Chamber in various leadership positions over the past 13 years. He has been a director many times. In recent years, he served as vice chairman of membership and vice chairman of government affairs. He was the recipient of the Greer Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 1996 and the Chairman’s Award for Excellence in 2004 and 2010.

He was chairman of the board in 2003 and also served as the Greer Chamber’s vice chairman of membership and communications in 2005.

Court rules youth football league can deny boy’s r

A local youth football league does not have to register a child who was denied entry because of previous conflicts between the boy’s parents and league officials, a judge ruled Thursday.

Tulsa District Court Judge Rebecca Scott Nightingale denied a temporary injunction Thursday afternoon brought by 12-year-old Brayden Mathis’s mother,Beads necklace, whose request to enroll her son in sixth-grade football with the Indian Nations Football Conference was denied late last month.

The boy’s father sued the INFC three years ago when the conference denied a request to transfer the boy to a team in the Jenks School District, even though the family was living in the Union district area.

A different judge ruled then that Brayden should be allowed to play in Jenks, although further complications arose when the family did not move into the Jenks district in accordance with the agreement.

The family did eventually move to the Jenks district and has lived there since. Brayden played in a different conference that his father created for fourth and fifth grade,tiffany, but requested to play sixth grade with Jenks in the INFC.

The boy, who kept his head down during most of the hearing and cried as he took the stand,watches, said he wanted to play with his friends.

"I want to play football with my friends from school, and I want to wear a jersey with my school’s name on it on Friday," he said.

Tom Askew,earrings, attorney for the INFC, said the organization must have rules to avoid chaos and was in keeping with its regulations when

it denied the Mathises most recent request.

Conference officials acknowledged the punishment was harsh but said it was the only way to proceed because experience showed that the boy’s father, Tony, would not honor any agreements with the conference and would not abide by its rules.

Tony Mathis was banned from all INFC events in 2007 but still attended two games and was escorted out, conference officials said.

All the witnesses in Thursday’s hearing said the child had broken no rules and they had heard nothing but good things about him.

Dana Mathis testified that she brought the suit this year to avoid bad blood between her husband and the league. She was not familiar with many details of the previous court events and said her husband handled Brayden’s football playing.

"I’m the wife," she said when asked about league specifics. "I don’t know."

Nightingale agreed with the INFC, ruling that the Mathises had not shown irreparable harm and had not proven that the INFC had acted beyond its capacity.

One of the INFC commissioners testified that Brayden could play in other leagues during sixth grade, and so had options beyond Jenks.

After the judge read her ruling, Brayden cried and huddled with his mother, Dana. His father was not present in the courtroom.

"Often the rights of the many have to prevail over the rights of one for an organization the size of the INFC to operate,money clips," Nightingale said.

The INFC has registered about 10,000 children for the 2010 football season, which runs about 10 weeks.

These ladies go to the mat for Third World kids

The thought of a child sleeping on the ground is what motivates Kuni Tiffany Bangles to stay up late sometimes, cutting neat rows out of used plastic bags.

What’s the connection?

The plastic is being used to make durable, easy-to-clean sleeping mats for children in Third World countries.

“When it comes to kids, everything else is beside the point,” said Schwemmer, 68. She’s crocheted 11 mats so far for Project Love Knots.

The idea started with Pat Hetzel, who was struck by the living conditions of a child she sponsors in Africa. The little one lives in a hut and sleeps on the ground. Hetzel, a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, was already making tote bags out of plastic bags to donate to church groups.

“I thought, ‘Why can’t we make resting mats out of the same bags?’ ” said Tiffany Bracelets, 80.

She mentioned the idea to her daughter-in-law, Lori Hetzel, who is program coordinator with Little Miracles International, an adoption agency based in Amarillo, Texas.

Lori Hetzel and her colleagues thought it was a great idea.

“These Love Knot mats have several uses, from physical-therapy mats to mats that children in Africa can sit or sleep on,” said Lori Hetzel. “They are very comfortable and waterproof.”

A group of women from Pat Hetzel’s church are collaborating on the project. Hetzel doesn’t belong to the church’s craft group, but she solicited members’ help. Over the last four months, she and the craft group have crocheted more than 20 mats.

Joy Granillo said this is the first time the craft group has adopted an international cause. In the Tiffany Pendants, they’ve taken on other humanitarian projects, such as making hats for newborn babies.

“It’s a way for them to be more comfortable and to have something to call their own,” Granillo said of the mat project.

The women meet on Mondays at the church, 1375 S. Camino Seco, to work on the projects.

Florence Vale is happy to be helping.

“This is a nice bunch here, and they do a lot for charity,” Vale, 78, said of the church group. Vale said she learned to crochet after her husband died about 44 years ago.

Lori Hetzel said they are planning to first help children in Romania, Uganda, Ethiopia Tiffany Earrings Russia.

Other groups around the nation are starting to get involved now, she said.

“We are hoping that, by word of mouth, these mats will make a difference for children around the world,” she said.

Lori Hetzel said that, in addition to being lightweight and sturdy, the mats are environmentally friendly because they are made of recycled plastic.

Tiffany Raises Full-Year Targets

In another sign that the bruised luxury sector may be nursing back to life, jewelry retailer Tiffany & Co. on Tuesday raised its profit outlook for the year after holiday sales turned out better than expected.

Sales in the two months ended Dec. 31 rose 17% to $799.1 million, the New York-based company said. Excluding the tiffany-translation impact, sales would have risen 13% with comparable-store sales increasing 8%. The company had 220 stores as of Dec. 31.

Tiffany raised its profit outlook for the year ending Jan. 31 to $2.07 to $2.12 a share from a previous projection of as much as $1.98 a share. Sales are expected to be $2.7 billion, the company said. Last year, Tiffany earned an adjusted profit of $2.33 per share on revenue of $2.86 billion.

Analysts, on average, were looking for Tiffany to post earnings of $1.96 a share on sales of $2.65 billion for the fiscal year ending this month, according to FactSet.

Sales in the Asia-Pacific region increased 11% to $240.8 million. On a constant-currency basis, sales rose 4%. tiffany bracelets-store sales rose 1%. They declined 12% in Japan and surged 26% increase across the rest of the region.

Tiffany’s fellow high-end retailers Saks Inc. and Nordstrom Inc. last week also reported better-than-expected for December, signaling that consumer spending is gradually recovering and shoppers feel more comfortable about buying things they don’t need, analysts said.

Tiffany also has benefited from a return of tourists to the U.S. as the dollar loses its value against foreign currencies while demand across most of its overseas markets also remained robust, they said. Analysts have said upscale jewelry spending has picked up during the holidays as demand was driven by shoppers with higher average household income as they sought “special” gifts.

“Sales trends are strong internationally and improving in the U.S., and the company continues to face easy comparisons throughout” fiscal year 2010, said Credit Suisse analyst Paul Lejuez, in a note published ahead of the Tiffany results. He said lower diamond and precious metal costs also will help bolster Tiffany’s gross margin.

In the Americas, sales increased 15% to $443.9 million. Comparable U.S. store sales increased 12%, driven by a 20% increase in its New York flagship and a 10% gain for U.S. branch stores. Demand was higher from both local customers and foreign visitors as the number of transactions increased. Internet and catalog sales in the U.S. increased 17%.

‘Make India a trading hub for gem & jewellery’

Gem & Jewellery council wants India to become a trading hub. Undaunted by high interest rates, withdrawal of GSP benefits by the US and the general economic slowdown in some markets, India’s Gem and Jewellery exports grew 22.27 per cent to touch $21 billion (Rs 95,000 crore) in 2007-08.

Because India imports key raw materials – gold and diamonds – the exports are highly import-valentines day jewelry. Last year, the industry imported $18.50 billion worth of raw materials, according to the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council GJEPC). However, the value addition of $2.5 billion, plus the domestic market for jewellery sustains the livelihood of some 30 lakh people.

According to Mr Sanjay Kothari, Chairman, GJEPC, India has about 10 per cent of world market and has a huge potential to export more.

Towards this end, the Council has taken a few steps. One of them is to develop India into a trading hub. Today, Israel and Hong Kong are leading trading centres in the world. India can easily be another major trading centre, Mr Kothari said.

Another step is to build Indian brands – to popularise ‘Made in India’. Today, leading brands such as Tiffany get their products made in India, but sell under their own brands. For a start, GJEPC wants to popularise ‘Made in India’ brand in West Asia, Mr Kothari said.

FORECASTING TRENDS The Council has also called for forecasting fashion trends. A ‘Trend Cell’ has been formed for this purpose. Alongside, the Council will work with the National Institute of Design and the National Institute of Fashion Technology for enhancing design capabilities of artisans.

Mr Kothari said that exporters from the South frequently suffer from a want of gold supplies.

Exporters are not allowed import directly – they have buy from institutions such MMTC and silver pendants such as SBI, ABN Amro and Nova Scotia.

Because the demand from the South is relatively small, these agencies do not operate there.

The GJEPC has represented to the Government to allow exporters to import gold.

IIJS 2008 Meanwhile, the Council holding an international exhibition, India International silver earrings Show (IIJS) 2008 between August 7 and 11, Mumbai.

Over 700 exhibitors with over 1,500 booths on an area 50,000 sq metres will showcase their products, Mr Kothari said. In a similar show last year, business worth Rs 3,000 crore was transacted, he said.

A JEWELLER’S PERSPECTIVE

Toronto is one of those cities that you just can’t help falling in love with. You fall in love with the tall buildings, the mild, lovely people, the cafes and restaurants, and the waterfront.

If you are as lucky as I was on a recent visit to this Canadian city, you also fall in love with the person you are with, even if you have been with that person for years. Fortunately for those of you reading this article, one of the ways men show affection is by purchasing jewelry for the ones they love. Fortunately for Tiffany & Co., one of its locations happens to be in the middle of downtown Toronto.

Although it seemed like a busman’s holiday, there was Tiffany’s and there we were in front of its entrance. I’m not sure, really, which one of us wanted to go in more.

I find that in all of my travels, I always end up in a jewelry store. I guess it’s an occupational hazard, sort of like noticing what kind of watch the person you are speaking to is wearing. I just can’t help it. Whenever I have gone into a jewelry store in the past, and actually since that Tiffany’s visit as well, I have always announced myself as a jeweler out of respect for the salesperson’s time.

I don’t want to get their hopes up for making a sale that I know isn’t going to happen. When I went into Tiffany’s on this trip, however, I was curious as to how I would be treated as a customer.

I must say, it was a wonderful experience. I don’t want to gush about how wonderful a store Tiffany’s is but I would sure like to hire the person who took care of us.

Upon walking into the store, my companion and I were greeted in a warm and friendly manner by a young man of Asian descent who, we learned, had spent his youth growing up in Paris. He was bright and charming. So charming in fact that we refer to him today by his first name only – sort of like Cher or Britney – and each of us knows exactly to whom the other is referring.

My friend wanted to try on several pieces of jewelry and our salesman was very accommodating. We looked at a pair of pink tourmaline and diamond drop earrings that were $27,000, a pair of diamond earrings that cost $1 1,000, and then we were shown, without asking, a diamond pendant that was priced above $350,000.

I was dressed in blue jeans and a sweater, my friend was dressed in a white top and jeans. She was wearing only tricolored gold rolling rings for jewelry and I wasn’t wearing any rings, only a strap model Patek Philippe watch.

Perhaps our salesman has the same habit I do of always noticing what watch someone is wearing, but he was very giving and more than happy to spend time with us and show us expensive jewelry. The experience was one that I won’t forget, and in fact, I have tried to incorporate the salesman’s techniques into my own sales presentations at work.

I like going into jewelry stores to see the merchandise and see how the store is decorated and displayed, but this time I got to see what it was like to be a customer, and I liked it

One day, I’m going to go back to Tiffany’s in Toronto and confess to the salesman that I’m in the jewelry business and wanted to see how it felt to be treated as a customer. I want to say thank you for a wonderful experience.

IN TIME FOR VALENTINE’S DAY OUTDOOR FLOWER SALES NOT ALLOWED IN SANTA MARIA

The city of Santa Maria issued the following news release:

In time for Valentine’s Day, outdoor flower sales are not allowed within the City valentines gifts of Santa Maria, except for established businesses selling flowers. This temporary 45-day moratorium is aimed at ending an extensive history of large numbers of unpermitted street-corner flower sales around February 14th and other holidays each year. Municipalities have broad authority to prohibit or regulate the sale of goods on public streets, sidewalks or other public property. After receiving public complaints about street flower vendors and considering its legal options, the Council unanimously approved the moratorium on January 20, 2009.

To the extent that vendors sell flowers on streets, sidewalks, from vehicles and from vacant lots, posing a distraction for drivers and a hazard for traffic, their removal will improve safety. Removal of unattractive street floral vending locations will improve the City’s aesthetics. Support of established floral business locations will add to the City’s overall economic health. Because street flower sales occur only around a few holidays during the year, the overall economic impact will be minimal.

Under the Municipal Code, outdoor flower sales by established businesses are currently valentines money clips allowed with a temporary-use permit from the Community Development Department. Such sales may be held for a maximum of 72 consecutive hours, no more than once every calendar quarter. The moratorium adopted by the City Council does not affect these types of sales, although it clarifies that outdoor flower sales can only be held by established businesses that normally sell flowers.

This temporary moratorium will be enforced by Santa Maria Police Officers, Code Compliance Officers and Park Services Officers. Violations of the moratorium are misdemeanors, which carry a maximum penalty of a fine up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in jail.
